It is fortunate that Gerard's uncle, George Giberne, was an enthusiastic early photographer. If not for that chance it is doubtful that any portraits of Hopkins would have survived other than the watercolour by his Aunt Anne Eleanor, painted when Gerard was about fourteen, which is in the archives of the National Portrait Gallery in London.
